State Government Causing Difficulty To UUM, Says Alumni Association

SINTOK, May 18 (Bernama) -- The Kedah state government's refusal to continue extending quit rent rebate to Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is causing difficulty to the university, according to UUM Alumni Association.

Its president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, said UUM administrators were under immense pressure considering that it involved a huge annual sum of RM1.7 million.

"The university should not be perceived as the enemy. On behalf of UUM's alumni of 80,000 people, I feel that the state government should have done it differently.

"They should have factored in UUM contributions in helping to generate local economic growth," he told reporters here Wednesday.

He also said the association was hopeful that the state government would take favourable steps to resolve the quit rent rebate issue.
